PILGRIMS WAY, HOLY ISLE
“Never attempt this route at dusk, in poor weather or on a rising tide!” A change – the late and steep backdrop of squall regains to penetrate the haze and falls, obscuring evensong. As night comes on, laid snow will hint on cornerstone, a strong sea-breeze wake ice and broken hail, sleet plane away at waves, across and back again, day fail. Out here, three marker posts into the distance is the only way – for your guesses are wild and faith may well betray more often than it would show you safety. You are alone: inching from post to post, the Pilgrims’ Way. Where the causeway becomes a strait, turns from your only path to waves and the insensate dead of night arrives.
